Night Vision Equipment For Any Situation

By Shawn A. Robinson

Nearly half of the hours each day take place at night, under dark conditions. Most outdoor activities generally end when the sun goes down because humans inherently have poor natural night vision without the aid of some kind of artificial light. Most people just accept and deal with this fact simply because they are unaware that affordable night vision equipment is readily available.

Contrary to popular belief, night vision products are available to the general public. Most people are under the false impression that these types of devices can only be obtained by military or law enforcement personnel. Now, it is true that items like special application night vision rifle scopes are only available to these entities, but there are many other devices available for purchase by anyone. In fact the average citizen can purchase and own top military grade equipment like night vision goggles, binoculars, and monoculars. The only limitation is that some higher end products cannot leave the United States.

Despite the fact that night viewing technology has existed for nearly half of a century, the equipment remains underutilized. Generation 1, or Gen 1, technology was actually invented during the Vietnam War era and is still sold today as an inexpensive entry point into the night seeing world. While Gen 1 products offer significantly improved dark condition viewing over naked eye viewing, this improvement pales in comparison to what US Generation 3 technology offers.

Generation 3 devices are considered expensive by some, however the benefits of using such equipment often seem priceless to the user. It all boils down to the ability to see without being seen. This ability offers virtually limitless potential. The advantages include, but are not limited to, improved abilities in wildlife observation, security, surveillance, camping, maritime navigation, search and rescue, astronomy, hunting, and even handling blackout situations.

Among the most common questions about night vision technology, are questions regarding the differences in the three generations. Obviously the price increases from Gen 1 to Gen 2, and from Gen 2 to Gen 3, but so do the benefits. On a scale of 0-100%, zero being unaided human vision and one hundred being comparable with normal daytime viewing abilities, each generation offers its own range of increased night seeing capabilities. Visual abilities for Gen 1 range from 10-20%, Gen 2 from 50-60%, and Gen 3 from 75-85%. Similarly, the operational life increases with each of these generations. Operational life of Gen 1 devices is typically 500-1,000 hours, while Gen 2 offers 2,000 hours, and this figure jumps to 10,000 for Gen 3 products.

Deciding which generation of night vision equipment to choose can be difficult to figure out without expert advice. Variables in this decision break down to personal preference, specific application, and available accessories. For example, some people opt to save money by going with a Gen 1 device, only to be disappointed in its performance. But a user's experience can be greatly improved with magnification and hands free accessories.

Suffice it to say, there's quite a wide variety of night vision products and accessories available for purchase, which creates seemingly endless combination options. From weapon mounted sights to infrared illuminators, the more one learns about night vision equipment, the more equipped they will be to make a wise purchasing decision.

Night vision rifle scopes are like ordinary military rifle scopes, only that they are modern and able to provide magnified reflection without lights. For that, they become very efficient nighttime safety precautionary devices when the need arises on special military projects and when sniping. But then, you can also use it for your own protection; like when traveling along dark areas and the car lights are not enough to give you a complete and surrounding lighting system. It is also very useful in adventures and recreational activities. Imagine camping or hunting with it, isn’t it very advantageous? It definitely is because you will be able to snipe your game animal even at night with no further troubles.

Besides, nighttime is actually the best time to shoot and take a wild animal. It is also very useful when checking around the lawn for foreign objects or people. You don have to flex a muscle just to see of there is something unfamiliar going on.

Pretty much the same with daytime rifle scopes, night vision rifle scopes are also according to optical magnification and objective lens diameter. Its reticle choices also ranges from fine crosshair, duplex crosshair, German reticle, target dot, Mil-dot, circle, old rage finding, modern range finding, and the SVD type. These reticles are also wired or etched into the rifle scope, but depend on the kind of rifle you have. Old rifles are using wired reticles, which means that the reticles are made from wires and placed on strategic optical positions; while the newer ones use embeds that are etched into optical lenses of the scope.

Acquiring any of these has ever been easy through reputed online providers of ammunition and recreation shops. All you have to do is pick your choice from the wide availability of different brands and production makes. Also, you can find it in kits or as a single stuff.

Night vision scope

Having night vision scope is an advantage as you can keep a proper check on the activities of your opponent even in dark and cloudy environs.

Working of night vision scope

It is really great to know the functioning of this Night Vision Rifle Scope. Human eye has its own spectrum of visibility and a person is not capable to view the images that falls beyond the range of spectrum. A person has to adjust his eyes whenever he enters in a room with little light. However, after some time he can view the images clearly and evidently. Basically, these Night Vision Rifle Scopes works on the behalf of human eye, only that diminutive light is intensified so that our eyes could see the imagery clearly. Although, we do not see through night vision goggles or night vision scope, only the front view is displayed to us through phosphor coated screen. One can also take it as a screen of television within the Night Vision Equipment. Now with several advancements in technology, various recent methodologies have incorporated in night vision scopes like image intensification and thermal imaging.

Thermal night vision scope

Along with image intensifying, other efficient technique on which night vision equipments work is thermal imaging. This technique is sophisticated as compared to previous one as it works with the heat emitted by several objects. Another name defined for this technique is infrared night vision scope. By using this technique, you can easily differentiate several objects. As a human body has the capability to release more heat as that of trees and stones, you will not counter any major difficulty while recognizing the person. Also the presence of any human in dark will cause more amplified white or red color on the screen of night vision equipment.

Night vision devices are relatively expansive but also are very effective especially when you want to see lucid and crystal clear pictures in cloudy and moonless sky.
