As a kid, I grew up wanting to become a spy. The secret life of an agent was something that I had always wanted, and playing games like 007 Goldeneye and Splinter Cell only made me more frustrated that my life wasn't that reality. Even though I've grown up since then, when I came up across the Pacific Digital Nightvision Goggles, the little kid inside of me screamed to purchase them. And I'm glad I did!

Setting up the goggles was incredibly easy. Once set-up, I could explore dark environments by using advanced infrared technology embedded in the goggle technology. It just takes five AA batteries in the battery pack at the back of the head-set, and a flick of the on switch and I'm good to go. Like swimming goggles, these are easily adjustable due to the adjustable rubber straps on the side.

The goggles come equipped with a hinged, flip-up eye-piece that can be opened when the goggles are turned off, or closed when the goggles are in use. My favorite feature is a screen display that lights up inside of the right eye-piece (which makes it even more realistic). I can choose between the maximum surveillance mode, which emits a barely-visible hoop of red LEDs around the eyepiece which allows up to 50 feet of visibility in absolute darkness, or I can go for stealth mode to remain completely invisible while exploring the mysterious landscape. A small switch on the side of the head-set allows me to toggle from a black and white display, to a green one. Think Modern Warfare 2.

The futuristic design of the whole thing is so striking. You look at something like this and it just screams Metal Gear Solid or Counterstrike, both are games that I have yet to cease playing. It's also just an awesome product to show off to your friends.

I know this product is meant for kids, but part of me just can't let go of the kid I used to be. I guarantee anyone that puts these goggles on will not want to take them off anytime soon.

Most outdoor activities generally end when the sun goes down because humans inherently have poor natural night vision without the aid of some kind of artificial light. Most people just accept and deal with this fact simply because they are unaware that affordable night vision equipment is readily available.

Contrary to popular belief, night vision products are available to the general public. Most people are under the false impression that these types of devices can only be obtained by military or law enforcement personnel. Now, it is true that items like special application night vision rifle scopes are only available to these entities, but there are many other devices available for purchase by anyone. In fact the average citizen can purchase and own top military grade equipment like night vision goggles, binoculars, and monoculars. The only limitation is that some higher end products cannot leave the United States.

Despite the fact that night viewing technology has existed for nearly half of a century, the equipment remains underutilized. Generation 1, or Gen 1, technology was actually invented during the Vietnam War era and is still sold today as an inexpensive entry point into the night seeing world. While Gen 1 products offer significantly improved dark condition viewing over naked eye viewing, this improvement pales in comparison to what US Generation 3 technology offers.

Generation 3 devices are considered expensive by some, however the benefits of using such equipment often seem priceless to the user. It all boils down to the ability to see without being seen. Obviously the price increases from Gen 1 to Gen 2, and from Gen 2 to Gen 3, but so do the benefits. On a scale of 0-100%, zero being unaided human vision and one hundred being comparable with normal daytime viewing abilities, each generation offers its own range of increased night seeing capabilities. Visual abilities for Gen 1 range from 10-20%, Gen 2 from 50-60%, and Gen 3 from 75-85%. Similarly, the operational life increases with each of these generations. Operational life of Gen 1 devices is typically 500-1,000 hours, while Gen 2 offers 2,000 hours, and this figure jumps to 10,000 for Gen 3 products.

Deciding which generation of night vision equipment to choose can be difficult to figure out without expert advice.
